Addressing Mold Illness
Mold and Mycotoxin illness is an extremely prevalent root cause underlining many health concerns. Mycotoxins are toxic compounds that are naturally produced by certain types of mold (think mold farts). One of the most frustrating parts about mold and mycotoxin illness is you may not even know you’ve been exposed, leaving diagnosis even more difficult.
Mold Illness – Breaking through Mold Myths:
As long as it’s not black mold, it’s not dangerous.
WRONG. Black mold has a terrible stigma, but it’s not the only dangerous mold out there. Molds that are red, green, white, yellow, and beige can also be extremely detrimental to your health.
You can just spray bleach on the mold to kill it!
WRONG. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) has even stopped recommended use of bleach on mold because not only does it not work, it makes it more dangerous. Learn more about this myth on our blog post: Bleach does not kill Mold.
You can cut the mold away and the problem is solved!
NOT ALWAYS. Think of mold like a super charged ball of loose pollen. If you cut that pollen ball out and then trek it through the house to dispose of it, pollen will be shedding off in every direction – thousands of mold spores will be covering every surface. You have to be so careful not to inappropriately disturb mold because you risk creating a bigger problem. Mold needs to be remediated by professionals, but the worst part is, most professionals do not understand how dangerous mold is and how to properly remediate it. Luckily, we have found some amazing remediates to help our clients and patients rid themselves of their mold issues.
It’s safe to live or work in a place with mold.
WRONG. It is absolutely not safe and in fact mold has been documented to cause a host of health issues that are both acute and chronic. You can not heal from mold if you are occupying the mold infested space.
Symptoms of Mold and Mycotoxin Illness:
- Urinary Changes, Frequent Urination, Increased Urination at Night
- Joint pain

- Frequent colds

Mycotoxin Illness has a huge range of symptoms, many of which are almost identical to the symptoms of Lyme disease.
Mold Illness Testing:
You will want to have both your home (or office) tested through a reputable mold inspection and remediation company (we have great recommendations should you need them!) as well as get functional labs to see if you have levels of mold/mycotoxin in your body. Our preferred method of testing is through Great Plain’s Laboratory Mycotoxin Panel.

First, we start with a detailed consultation to understand all of your symptoms, the timeline of them, along with any environmental exposures that we can piece together.
